If you opt out two years in a row, wouldnt that sort of be retirement?

IN any case, it will help clear up the OF/1B situation a bit there.

    • Yeah, didn't realize you could still opt out. And yeah, this appears to be a saunter into retirement....

It's also the last year of his contract. As a free agent who hasn't played in two years and hasn't played well in many more, yeah, he's probably done.

        • If he doesn't retire, I believe the Rockies have to pay him a $2 million buyout of his $15 million 2022 option year.

          • Do the contract year run in an opt out?

Based on what MLB offered players choosing to opt-out last year, I believe the answer is yes. But I'm not sure if any of the opt-out rules have changed.

              • To continue the discussion, Desmond has foregone $13 million in salary for 2019 & 2020, which he wouldn’t have done if not for COVID-19. Choosing your family’s health & safety...and being committed to what you feel in your heart over that much money is HUGE. He’s earned a lot of money during his career (approximately $76 million), but that’s still a large sum of money to voluntarily choose not to receive.

                • Certainly helps CJ Cron's chances of winning a roster spot and getting the bulk of the ABs at 1B.

For sure JC. And Pillar signed with the Mets potentially opening up more OF time for Hampson and 2B time for McMahon (up until Pillar signed, I'd been reading that the Rox wanted him back). I'd think most NL-only owners have to bump Cron up higher/bid a few extra dollars for him, now.

                      Best guess right now is:

Hampson as the 2B/OF utility guy (but a solid 450 PAs)
Rodgers at 2B (with Hampson filling in)
                      McMahon at 3B
                      Cron at 1B

And don't forget about Greg Bird!

I think there's at least 1 more veteran OF signing coming here too.

It would seem to make more sense for them to sign Maikel Franco to play 3B. They have several players that are more than adequate in the OF.

                        • Rockies manager Bud Black said Friday that Brendon Rodgers (hamstring) is expected to be sidelined for at least a month.

I guess that boosts up Hampson’s value.

Haven't we seen this movie before?

Rodgers gets hurt. Hampson's value climbs. Hampson can't get on base. Hampson gets dropped to the bottom of the order. Rodgers comes back and forces Hampson to the bench.
