I was thoroughly impressed with the debut as well. Can't wait for the rest. And the next book, which is supposed to arrive in JULY!!!
Catelyn was not as attractive as I expected, even though I like that none of the characters are movie star pretty, like in LOTR. Except for Bran...that kid is too damn cute! And Dinklage is much prettier than what I expected from Tyrion!
Wonder if the pups will grow into dire wolves as big as their dead mum...she was huge!
Drogo was perfect. As were Joff and Viserys. The casting on those three could not be better. Arya too, since we're on the topic.
But I agree that it can get confusing for those unfamiliar with the books. Believe me when I say it takes a while to sort them out in the books too. But it will get better. My only concern is that they may have to spend too much time on this.

I finally saw #1. Sean Bean is perfect as Lord Stark, and my favorite subplt, the dragon eggs, is getting full treatment. Spoiler:She is one of the stongest female characters in 21st century fiction, but she doesnt look it. Watch the dire wolf puppies. They are the time line.

watched the first episode. meh. seems just another in the string of soft porn miniseries on HBO/starz/etc. (spartacus, borgias, camelot, thrones, ...). better than camelot though - man that one is a stinker so far, IMHO."Instead of all of this energy and effort directed at the war to end drugs, how about a little attention to drugs which will end war?" If I did not know all the plot lines. I would be lost as well.
OTOH This is one book that might work better as a movie. Dialogue in books is slow, but in a movie naturally paced. And visuals can replace a lot of dexcription.
Now that I think on it, Sean Penn would be a perfect Lord Stark. Sean Bean is very good as well.
