  • Another top 10 movie question.

What is the newest movie to make your top 10 favorite movies of all time list?

I have seen some pretty good movies in the last couple of years, but none of them would make my top 10 list.

top 10? for me, probably nothing since Inception.
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

Two other Christopher Nolan movies come to mind for me. "The Prestige" and "Dark Knight". Not sure if they are in my top 10. But if not they are close.

No movie has come close to making my top 10 for a long time but that's mainly because I'm a big classic movies buff. The last "modern" movie to even make my top 50 was "Slumdog Millionaire" and that came out around 10 years ago at least. Occasionally, I see an old movie that I've never seen before that I'll rank higher than that.

Hmmm, here's some of my recent (within oast 5 years). Not sure any of them crack the top 10 though...

            Django unchained
            Wolf of Wall Street
            Dark Knight
            Guardians of the Galaxy
            The Avengers
            Inglorious Basterds

Going back 10 years, here's what I got...

No Country for Old Men (this might be the one that cracks the top 10)
There Will Be Blood (Ok, maybe this one, too)
The Departed (Hmmm, maybe this one, too!)
            Into the Wild

            Going back 15 years...

Oldboy (might be a top 10 candidate)
            Kill Bill 1 and 2
            Donnie Darko
Requiem for a Dream (possibly he most unnerving movie ever)

I don't watch many movies in the theater, but we just went to see The Imitation Game.... mostly because my kids love Benedict Cumberbatch, and it was excellent. All 4 of us liked it, and that pretty much never happens.

The third viewing of There Will be Blood didn't stand the test of time - I was surprised

The Wrestler is a damn good movie

Life of Pi, Toy Story 3, Apocalypto, Inception, Dark Knight, There Will Be Blood, and Oldboy are in my top-tier, but that's a lot bigger than 10 movies. Actually after making a list, Oldboy cracks my top 10.

Not sure I could even ever narrow it down to a top 20, but right now I'd go:

                  1. 2001
                  2. Godfather
                  3. Memento
                  4. Network
                  5. Lawrence of Arabia
                  6. Oldboy
                  7. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
                  8. The Thin Red Line
                  9. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
                  10. Star Wars
                  11. The Fellowship of the Ring
                  12. Dr Strangelove
                  13. Inception
                  14. Full Metal Jacket
                  15. The Big Lebowski
                  16. Fight Club
                  17. Apocalypse Now
                  18. Pulp Fiction
                  19. The Dark Knight
                  20. Amadeus

Making a top 10 list is very hard. Having a movie come out that cracks it even harder.

I think this is pretty close to my top 10:

                    Die Hard

                    Tombstone

                    Plains Trains and Automobiles

                    Rio Bravo

                    Godfather

                    Godfather II

                    Young Frankenstein

                    Pulp Fiction

                    Jurassic Park

                    Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2 (2003 and 2004)

I have to drive into the city. I wonder if I will amend my top 10 after the drive?

I wish I had a good answer to that question. I guess before 1980 or so.

Casablanca is my clear #1. The rest could almost more or less be in any order. Casablanca is thought of as being a romantic, boy-girl movie and it is but actually it's more about being noble and self-sacrifice for a greater good. And at the time it was made WW II was very much in doubt and of course we ended up winning. That's the reason it's #1 above other great movies. And of course, Ingrid and Bogey were great together. The tune "As Time Goes By" running thru the whole thing also was a nice touch.
