  • Aren't these 11 year contracts just a way to avoid the luxury tax and defer payments? Especially in an inflationary environment, salary deferment is just a sneaky way for the team to pay less in net present value.

I don't think of them as actual 11 year commitments, but instead 6-8 year deals that the team is paying out over a longer term.

He is gonna be an albatross for the second half of the deal (so will Turner), but will be great for them the first 4-5 years, I think. I'd rather have Turner for $20 mil more over the next 11 years, but neither deal is a team friendly one in terms of years.

A couple of plusses for Turner IMO...still has the elite speed that should play for another 3-5 years. Can, and will play both MI positions, unlike Zander, who rumor has it, will insist on staying at SS. Maybe that'll change now that he's gotten paid, but who knows?

But yeah, both deals are crazy long, but that seems to be the market these days. Judge may end up being the worst...

All good points...but the players are not going away for the final 3-5 years on their contracts. They'll take up roster spots just like Pujols did until his miraculous comeback last year.

I don't think that affects it. At that point it is a sunk cost. They dont have to take up roster spots. They can be cut or traded.

Think of it as if it was an 8 year contract and the player became a free agent afterwards. Now split that 8 year contract up into 11 yearly payments and waive the player after 8 years.

Same result on the field. Same total payment, but you've spread it out over 11 years instead of 8.

I think I should send your post to the Cubs. They need to make a splash and good FA's are dwindling.

Or you can be the Mets, and spread it out over 50 years, enabling your fans to hear "Happy Bobby Bonilla Day" every July 1st. I think 12 more years to go!

Manny will probably opt out next season, but I doubt Xander will shift over to 3rd. Does he make them better, sure. But not THAT much better...
It's a Preller move, which have gotten the Padres into a position where they'll annually compete for the World Series. They have an owner who doesn't mind spending 300 million+ a year--
I see them extending Manny, Soto and Darvish as Seidler wants the Padres to be THE team in MLB, I'd argue that Kim is better defensivly than X, but it's close--Tatis wasn't going back into the IF anyhow, he'll be either RF or LF depending on how his defense plays out.
The Padres got better, it's not my money so--that's really all I care about--the team getting better.
PS. we gotta find some time in the new year to grab those drinks!

Full no trade clause for Xander in the Pads deal...but yes, that COULD cut him I suppose.

Once Patsy Cline opens in January, I should have some time here and there in between rehearsals for the next 2 shows lol.

BTW did we want to explore an RJSW roto league? we could do an in-person draft/auction at spring training or something like that.

I'm pretty overwhemed with leagues as it is...I'd probably have to pass on that.
But January sounds good...let me know when you have a night free...

There is something “special” in the water in St. Louis. Edmonds, McGwire and Pujols all made interesting comebacks from age/injury related declines after joining the Cards….

                          • Padres sign Adam Engle as a late inning defensive specialist/4th OF type. Should start the first month of the season until Tatis returns.
Just Padre houskeeping here, they have also sigend this off season--Seth Lugo, Matt Carpenter
They also have signed Brett Honeywell and Pedro Severino to split contracts.
The later leads me to believe they might be thinking of trading Campusano somewhere for starting pitching. I've heard Pablo Lopez mentioned, but you hear alot regarding the Padres and roster moves these days.
They're also supposedly in on Cueto and even Chapman, so...

Padres 2B prospect Eguy Rosario is expected to miss multiple months after undergoing surgery to repair a broken ankle.
