  • Should I am,e this offer?

    NL only 5x5, 10 teams.

I have finally had to give up on this season and dumped this week. I have a surplus of closers going into next year (Bednar, Helsey, Devon Williams). I also have Phillips and Hughes as lottery tickets. I am thinking of offering Williams (9A) plus non keeper Justin Turner for Gallen (11A). My other potential starter keepers are Wright (5A), Cobb (11A) and Ranger Suarez (10B). We can keep up to 10 and Cobb and Suarez may not make the cut given a strong keeper list, but who knows what the off season will bring.

Am I better off holding onto to Williams or is Gallen really a potential top of rotation starter worth acquiring?

I'd pull the trigger to get Gallen.

    Ottawa Triple Eh's | P.I.M.P.S. | 14 team keep forever
    Champions 16,21 | Runner up 17,19-20

The FOS (retired) | MTARBL | 12 team AL 5x5
    Champions 01,05,17 | Runner up 13-15,20

I would too, but if you could throw all your other closers at the guy instead of Williams to get him, I'd try that first. I love both players.

Another vote to get Gallen. Good contract, near elite starter.

Does the Pen prefer Gallen over May. Contract status is the same

I like May too, but Gallen is a no brainer to me. He has a longer track record of proven performance and while he has had health scares too, I think he is safer. The only area May has the edge is wins, given their respective teams.

Tough call. I would personally take May given upside and team context for wins. Either an obvious take over Williams.

If I had to make the call right now I'd say Gallen. Might be a different choice a month from now.

I'm with Sharky here. I'll take May's upside and much better chance for wins than Gallen's somewhat better track record and awful team.

I don't think you are this offer.

Wins or not, Gallen is still a no brainer for me. That is not slight to May, but Gallen is a stud and continues to prove that.

I’m coming around to this view. Gallen has just been dominant.

He's been great of late, but his xERA is almost a full run above his ERA, and with just a turn of bad luck, you get.....2021.

I think that says more about the boundaries of xERA than it says about Gallen. Of the 16 qualified pitchers who have an ERA below 3, Carlos Rodon is the only pitcher whose xERA is lower than his ERA.

No one would predict that Gallen has a sub 2.5 ERA going forward, and we aren't suggesting buying him at that rate, but a sub 3.5 ERA seems likely with his 3.35 xERA/3.08 FIP/3.45 xFIP.

Which, in terms of ERA, makes him a top-25ish SP. Combine that with a OK, but hardly great K rate, solid, but not great stuff and a wholly unattractive team, and I'm buying the upside of Dustin May.
