  • 2K21: Madison Bumgarner

MadBum has had a rough few years, to say the least. It seems everything started going downhill for him after his dirt bike accident during the 2017 season, where he injured his shoulder. Then he had a finger injury in 2018, a subpar 2019, before a 2020 season that was beyond brutal.

Like with others, it's tough to overlook what MadBum did in the short season: 6.48 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, but more importantly, a 2.8 HR/9 rate and an eyebrow-raising loss in velocity.

His FB lost 3.1 mph from 2019 to 2020 (91.7 to 88.6) and 3.8 mph off his cutter - and he threw these two pitches 75% of the time.

Most projections have MadBum with a near 5.00 ERA with a mid 1.30s WHIP, making him barely rosterable in deeper leagues.

How has his velocity been this spring so far? He has 6 Ks in 2 IP for the spring. Is he toast or a great late round pick?

I paid big money for him to be my ace in 2017. And i still haven't forgiven him.

6 Ks in his first game is pretty damn good. But he was only sitting 90-91, so it's hard to get too excited, even if his curveball reportedly looked outstanding. But it's early, and if he adds a couple ticks throughout the spring, I'll definitely be ready to jump back in.

If the price is right I will spend a few shekels on him.

Seems like there are two types of players risk averse or gamblers hoping to catch lightening in a bottle. I lean towards the second, but not going double digits.

Shouldn't this be in the over react to spring training thread?

            Maybe.

Is paying $6 for Mad Bum over reacting?

Based on last year, for sure. This year? Somebody else went to 5. It isn't an outrageous amount to risk.

With our NL only league I doubt I get him for 6 but I will be in the early bidding.
