  • Which SPs to extend

In my 14 team points league, I am loaded arms, but most are due for an extension. One, Kershaw is too pricey to extend....the risk is too high. But the others are all cheap, and with high inflation because of 15 major league and 20 minor league keepers per team, the risk must be weighed against the high price of arms in a points league where many top arms are kept each year. So, with that in mind, which of these would you extend and for how long. The cap in this league is $400 and extensions are only $4 a year in my league. Top 5 pitchers often exceed $100 in the auction. All of these guys would go over $50 on the open market.

    Brandon Woodruff $4
    Max Fried $5
    Dinelson Lamet $5
    Lance Lynn $1

Your criteria are certainly different than most leagues; I'd go four years on the first three and two on Lynn. That would put them at about 40% of your projected value or less. Plus, if any of them get hurt, you have years in the bank to bring them back without too much of a financial hit.

Given Lynn's age and mileage and his occasional tendency to allow himself to get big enough to cause a calculable orbital shift in the moon, even with your lower cost criteria, I just can't go more than two years on him.

Without knowing our weird league, you nailed what most would do for all of the guys. I have gone back and forth on Lynn and agree at his age, just hard to go over 2 years. He is 34 this year and 35 in year two. The other guy I am stuck on is Lamet. Fried and Woodruff has some injury history, of course, but Lamet's is more concerning and that bicep has me scared. I might just do 3 years on him. Do you agree that he is the guy that it makes the most sense to go more conservative on of that trio?

I agree with that last point as well as chance's recommendations.
If DMT didn't exist we would have to invent it. There has to be a weirdest thing. Once we have the concept weird, there has to be a weirdest thing. And DMT is simply it.

What's the penalty on dropping a player with an extended contract?

I'd be conservative on Lamet and Lynn due to injury history.

I thought about that, but if you're sure about the value he'd go for back at auction, I'd take that risk. I'm also thinking if he's going to break, it'll be sooner rather than later and you'll have him banked in once he recovers. But three years is a good choice, too.

The breaking early part is a good point. I just hope he doesn't have another TJ surgery....Surviving a second one of those is a real long shot.

I'd have to roster him until the offseason and use a keeper spot plus pay off 100% year one, and 50% each additional year.

I'm with Chance...if Studs can go for $100 bucks, getting those guys at low double digits is insanely good. I might even go 3 years on Lynn...he's the type of guy who can carry a workload well into his late 30's.
