  • Another Corona question.

We are starting to get low on food supplies. I expect to go out later today for groceries.

My wife is wanting to go out as well. Given that we are in quarantine together if one of us gets exposed the other will surely be exposed as well. So can you see any reason why we should not go together?

Also given that we would drive together can you see any reason that the 6 foot rule should apply to us? Of course we would keep 6 feet between us and the other shoppers. Both for our own protection as well as for the comfort and safety of the others.

We will be wearing masks and gloves.

    Thoughts?

I really think only one of you should go. Both for prevention of transmission and protection of others. Hopefully everyone else is thinking about it that way too.

Two noses, two mouths, two sets of hands touching things is twice as likely to get it as one. And if you have it (and don't know it), twice as likely to expose others.

I think only thinking about transmitting to each other later is underselling the actual issues.

Ken's probably right. I went to the store myself yesterday even though my wife had planned on going with me. Sure, if one of you gets it the other one probably will too but like Ken said, if either of you are asymptomatic carriers then that's one more source of transmission.

        I agree.

I think sending two people probably makes it essentially twice as likely to be exposed

Wouldn't we both have to be asymptomatic carriers as we have been quarantined together with no symptoms.

Thank you all for the input some really good food for thought. Then again that is why I came here to ask the question.

From what I'm reading there's a large portion of those who have it (50%+?) who are completely asymptomatic. If you are both asymptomatic carriers you are sending out twice the virus to that store.

Also, I guess the other question is what is gained by both of you going? I'd recommend one person going and if you want to shop together use facetime to discuss what to buy, heck that's what I do even when there isn't a pandemic and I'm out shopping, because I'm useless as a shopper.

Our grocery chains in Texas request that only one person per family visit the store, for the safety of the public and the store employees.

This makes the most sense to me. It also raises a couple of other questions.

If one is an asymptomatic carrier do they stay that way indefinitely? Or does the virus pass and they cannot transmit it to others?

They don't know yet. It was initially believed the virus would pass and the individual would develop immunity to this strain of the virus. However, recent events in S. Korea seem to indicate the virus "comes back" - which could mean full immunity doesn't happen, they're dealing with another mutation, or the individuals weren't fully "cured", they were merely asymptomatic, and then something happened to trigger a worse outbreak in the individual. Or some combination. Or none of the above.

From what I've read, S. Korea should have some answers on immunity and mutation next week.

The bar as to what constitutes as a "date" is incredibly low at our house now.

I read this thread through post #7 to Mrs. Gregg.

She wanted to go so we decided she would go on her own. Thank you for the input.

When she got back she said hardly anyone was wearing masks and pretty much acting as nothing was going on. Very disappointing.
