  • Where will Craig Kimbrel sign?

He's a top closer wherever he goes, but where will he end up? Braves? Phillies? Red Sox? other?

Boston or ATL are my guesses. Twins as a dark horse, along with maybe the Nats.

I think SD is only willing to spend the money if it means a more useful long-term guy (Harper/Machado). Probably the same thing applies to the White Sox.

I think if Philly can't spend their money on Harper/Machado, they'll just hang onto it for now as they already spent big on one RP.

WSH supposedly has money allocated for Harper and could probably use another reliever, I guess?

And the Twins probably have some $ to spend and could smell blood in the water with the Indians not trying super hard, but I think they're more likely to go for Keuchel if they're going to spend.

I suspect that he re-signs with the Red Sox...I can't believe that they would go into the season with their current crop of untested relievers. He may have to take a pillow deal, or something quite a bit less than what he was originally asking.

This is what I think too. I think he re-signs with Boston.

If Dombroski is to be believed, he wont be back, even on a one year deal.

If the Red Sox are being honest, I think Kimbrel is probably waiting to see who loses out on Harper and Machado. The Phillies, for instance, might feel they have money to burn and want to sign a name for the fans. They might up their offer. I could also see him going back to the Braves.

So with Kimbrel out there and almost definitely going to close no matter where he signs ... how do you rank these guys drafting right now?

              Arodys Vizcaino
              David Robertson
              Matt Barnes
              Tyler Thornburg
              Ryan Brasier
              Trevor May
              Sean Doolittle

Anybody else that could be affected? If you could figure out the Red Sox closer now, and it wasn't Kimbrel, they'd be a huge steal.

                Doolittle
                Robertson
                Vizcaino
                May
                Random Red Sox guys

Always go safety here. Closers are so random and if you don't even know if a guy is one. Ugh.

It's not looking like the Red Sox want to pay a 5 year 15M+ deal for Kimbrel. A one year deal with either the Braves or Cardinals? The market doesn't look like it will be what he wants in 2019, so he may end up taking a pillow offer of 1 year 15M deal. That would be a cheap price for a 1 year rental.

I am not sure players are all looking for pillow contracts after two consecutive bad winters for them. If he can get three years through the end of the CBA, that might be what he takes. No idea where he would get it, however.

After watching the Melancon and Holland deals blow up in their teams faces, everyone is hesitant to pay big money to closers now. Especially when a suitable (and cheaper) replacement can so often be found among their own middle relievers.

                        CRAIG KIMBREL
                        RP, BOSTON RED SOX

Keith Law of ESPN reports that negotiations between the Nationals and Craig Kimbrel are "further down the road" than has been previously reported.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported Saturday that the Nats have maintained interest in the free agent reliever and it would appear the two sides might be progressing toward a deal. Obviously, there would be major fantasy implications here, as Kimbrel would push Sean Doolittle to a setup role. Washington already forfeited a draft pick when they signed Patrick Corbin and would lose a lesser pick if they signed Kimbrel.

So the Nationals are saying they don't want to go over the luxury tax threshold, which means they have, oh, about 1.2 million for Kimbrel. I'm sure they've offered him 6/75 with 60mil deferred or something.

I have to decide today if I keep Doolittle in an NL only league and I'm leaning towards doing it.

Tough decision to make. Personally don't think that the Nats will sign him. If he does go to the NL thinking that that would be a bold move for the Braves.

Apparently he lives just down the road from Braves camp and he's been spotted near there. I agree that it seems like the most logical fit, but I do think there's a decent chance that Kimbrel just sits out. I can't see the Braves giving him a long-term, high $ deal. I could see them giving him a 1-year deal like Donaldson but I'm not sure Kimbrel would take it.
