  • RHD's Latest Top 150 Roto Prospects ("Pre-MLB Draft" Version)

The 2018 MLB Draft is tonite and I wanted to do an update of my roto prospects list beforehand. A lot more changes than I was expecting.

Same spiel as usual: I generally follow BA's prospect eligibility requirements, which are <=130 MLB AB or <=50 MLB IP. Unlike BA tho, amateurs, unsigned draftees and foreign players are eligible. Also, while BA has a different IP limit for relievers (30 IP?), relievers are eligible as long as they dont have >50 IP. As usual, this is for roto, not 'real' baseball, so pitchers are downgraded some, catchers downgraded somewhat (unless they're elite prospects and their bat will play at any position), and actual closers are upgraded a lot, SB guys who project to get playing time get upgraded some, and guys who either currently are or project to soon be regulars can get upgraded quite a bit. Position listed is their current primary one to the best of my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong), not the one they're likely to end up at.

I havent yet but I'll do a Google doc w the list and post the link.

As a Meadows owner, I am pleasantly surprised to see the huge jump for him. What was the rationale behind that?

I'm not rhd, but I'd guess it's related to his appearing to have earned a major league role; coming into the season with Polanco/Marte/Dickerson ahead of him it didn't look like he was going to have anywhere to play in the near future.
In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

        Thanx fo the response, Erik.

Simply a matter of getting regular MLB playing time and making the most of it. Scouts have always believed in his talent and finally he's starting to prove them right. SSS but he's OPSing 1.202 in MLB. CAnt see Pittsburgh sitting him as long as he produces like this and if he keeps it up he's a guy I want on my roto team.

          Thanks as always rhd.

Might want to reconsider keeping Cal Quantrill in the top 100. As a college pitcher he should be seeing better results by now. Instead, he's got a career 4.13 ERA and 1.42 WHIP which is almost exactly what those stats are this year as well.

Wanted to get your thoughts on Austin Dean as well. I just dropped Quantrill for him, mostly since the Marlins OF is wide open and he's sporting a .353/.421/.553 line between AA and AAA this year with almost the same amount of walks as strikeouts. His track record before this year was pretty unimpressive but I'm wondering if he added muscle or changed his swing or something.

            Thanx for the response, overkill.

Scouts are down on Quantrill somewhat and his results this year are unimpressive, hence the drop. I still expect him to be in an MLB rotation in the near future and rotation spots should be wide open in SD so he has potential in roto. BA's report says he has middle to TOR potential. That's good enough to keep him firmly in the Top 100 for now.

I dont know if Dean has changed anything. He tore up AA this year but he's 25 y/o at the end of the year. BA didnt even have him in the Marlins' top 30, which is saying a lot since they have one of the very worst farm systems. Yeah, the Marlins OF is wide open so he could get a shot but he's not someone I would get excited about.

I know the short infielder is on the rebound with Betts, Altuve thriving, but does Madrigal have the power profile to be fantasy relevant to this extent?

RHD, I'm surprised you still rank Alford and Mateo so high. What do you make of their horrific, awful, no good 2018 seasons so far? The sample size of putrid is growing daily.

not really, considering Betts can play the infield from RF. that would make him either really tall or really fast.
After former Broncos quarterback Brian Griese sprained his ankle and said he was tripped on the stairs of his home by his golden retriever, Bella: “The dog stood up on his hind legs and gave him a push? You might want to get rid of that dog, or put him in the circus, one of the two.”

33 including the last 19. Some of the more recent ones I missed were SMH moments but most of those 70's guys didn't even ring a bell.

Thanx for the response, Sour Masher.

I try not to react too much to early season struggles of prospects rated very highly before the season. Tatis was struggling earlier, too, but he's really taken off now. Alford was a consensus Top 50 prospect before the season and Mateo was consensus top 75 w great SB potential. They still project to be above-average MLB regulars and as a roto player I'm interested in them for that reason. Maybe you're rt and I do have them too high but if they continue to struggle I'll move them down.

Got 21 of 54 (really 22 because I typed Griffey but didnt give me credit because I didnt type ", Jr."). Some of these were impossible - like who would have thought that Tim Foli was a #1 overall choice? Bill Almon? And who the heck is Al Chambers?

                            Overkill's 33 is amazing.

26/54, including all between 2004 and 2013. I don't really pay much attention to minor leaguers until they're just about ready to come up.

Most obscure player that I got: David Clyde, the #1 case study on how not to handle young pitchers.

Most famous player that I missed: Harold Baines. Totally forgot he was a #1 overall pick.
