  • *** VD 5 Commentary Thread ***

So VD5 is tabled to be a Peak Year draft ... and VD6 may be an Auction (if we can figure it out).

I've got about 750 hitter peak years added to the spreadsheet so far. A-G are done with the likeliest players, and some of the best players at the other letters.

    Hitter-Peak-Years Spreadsheet

I'm adding the 3 and 5 year peaks, and taking into account Decades and Franchises. This would actually be a very good format for a Franchise draft, or any combo-draft.

If anyone wants to help, you can download this blank SS, and have a crack at the following letters/players (please state which letter you will be tackling so we don't replicate the work ... takes about 25 mins-1 hour to do a letter):

    W

    Honus Wagner (done)
    Ted Williams (done)

    Larry Walker
    Billy Williams
    Dave Winfield
    Hack Wilson
    Ken Williams
    John Ward
    Maury Wills
    Walt Wilmot
    Paul Waner
    Zach Wheat

    V

    George Van Haltren (done)
    Mo Vaughn
    Greg Vaughn
    Arky Vaughn
    Omar Visquel
    Robin Ventura
    Eddie Van Slyke
    Bobby Veach
    Mickey Vernon
    Joey Votto

    T

    Frank Thomas
    Jim Thome
    Sam Thompson
    Tommy Tucker
    Hal Trosky
    Alan Trammell
    Mike Tiernan
    Miguel Tejada
    Bill Terry
    Joe Torre
    Pie Traynor

    S

    Sammy Sosa
    Garry sheffield
    Mike Schmidt
    Harry Stovey
    Al Simmons
    Duke Snider
    Ryan Sandberg
    Willie Stargell
    Tris Speaker
    George Sisler
    Vern Stephens
    Jim Stenzel
    BJ Surhoff
    Ted Simmons
    Mike Sweeney

    R

    Alex Rodriguez (done)
    Frank Robinson (done)

    Manny Ramirez
    Tim Raines
    Jim Rice
    Cal Ripken
    Ivan Rodriguez
    Pete Rose
    Jim Ryan
    John Reily
    Jackie Robinson
    Sam Rice
    Hardy Richardson

    P

    Mike Piazza (done)
    Rafael Palmeiro
    Albert Pujols
    Tony Perez
    Dave Parker
    Vada Pinson
    Kirby Puckett
    Fred Pfeffer
    Boog Powell

    O

    Mel Ott (done)
    Jim O'Rourke (done)

    Magglio Ordonez
    David Ortiz
    Tip O'Neil
    Lefty O'Doul
    Amos Otis
    Darby O'Brien
    Tony Oliva
    Al Oliver
    John Olerud
    Dave Orr
    Ben Oglivie

    How to:

    1. Go to www.baseballreference.com
    2. Find player and highlight the desired peak years by clicking the first and last of your selected range
    3. A pop up appears with the accumulated data from your selected range.
    4. Copy/paste the entire second line starting from "Average" ... start your paste on the Column marked "Stat"
    5. Then copy/paste the missing ratios from the first line of the pop-up (BA OBP SLG OPS OPS+).
    6. Fill in the year Years range, eligible decade, whether it is a 3 or 5 year peak, and then the eligible franchise(s)*

*Franchises are calculated by majority within the range. If X player has 3 years at STL and 2 at NYY, he's a STL player for those peak years.

If the same players has another 5 year range with 2xNYY, 2xSFG, 1xCHC he is eligible at NYY & SFG for that range. I have been putting a question mark next to players with 3+ eligible franchises, but I suppose they will be eligible at all 3 in such circumstances. I found one old time player who would be eligible at 6 different franchises over a consecutive 6 year period.

We can of course still use the old Franchise rules as well ... this will just provide another option down the line ... if we're having to input the data by hand, may as well cover all the bases now.

I know you've put a lot of time in on this next one, but wouldn't it make sense to do another BY-only draft, maybe with some additions (decades/KOs/etc)?

I just like it as a change of pace in terms of altering player values, having new players in the pool, etc. But the peak year draft would do that, too. I'm in no matter what, but I do think BY decades would be fun at some point.

I would like to do a " Hacko Wins Draft" if I have a vote.

So you want an old guys likely to break down draft?

Might be a good time to start discussions for VD5. I don't care what it is really, people seem kind of interested in the letters/decades, I would be up for that.

Whatev's the peak period data isn't nearly ready ... and I'm too busy to finalize it all right now.

So letters / decade BY sounds OK to me.

Have we ever done decades and letters before? I know we've done letters and franchises.
