From what I've read, there are several reasons why Borders has flopped in recent years.

1. They were slow to get into online retailing and to build their brand that way.
2. They bungled the whole eBook trend, failing to come up with their own brand like Amazon and Barnes & Noble did.
3. They fell way behind B&N in the college textbook business, one of the few reliable markets for printed materials anymore.
4. They found it difficult to recruit top management talent to their headquarters in Ann Arbor. By contrast, B&N HQ are in NYC, the mecca of the publishing industry.
5. Partly as a consequence of #4, they seem to have a lot of boneheads running things.

Very nice summary.

And they overpaid for their store locations vs their competitor.

i went in there looking for war and peace once but when i asked for help they told me to look under it's original title war--what is it good for. they said Tolstoy's mistress didn't like the title and insisted he change it.

...what kind of name is Borders anyways? is there some kind of border around the store where you can't go outside? is it like the opposite of a library card where you need a green card instead? or was the store concept built around ppl boarding? is it like a love ranch, where you pay rent but instead of sex you read books. and you can have coffee. maybe they should've named themselves 'coffee, books and bed'... maybe someone should invent a book/bed store where you try out the book in bed, and then buy both at the same time. why did Borders have Starbucks inside anyways? were the books so boring they needed to pump it customers with coffee or they'd go upstairs and goto bed?

...sorry i've been watching too much Seinfeld lately. im starting to think like Jerry.

Maybe Tom and Louis Borders couldn't decide on whose name should go first? Maybe Borders sounds better than Tom and Louis Books?

did you know that when Uncle Leo talked to you, he would always grab your arm.
When talking to people, he has a tendency to grab the person's arm (often uncomfortably) and hold them close. In "The Pony Remark," Jerry guessed that this was because so many people have walked away from him in the middle of his conversation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncle_Leo also, i was wondering, has anyone actually ever seen Jerrys cousin Jeffery? what kind of stealthy operation is this Parks Department anyways? and why did Jeffery get Isaac's apartment over Elaine after Manya died? and if he's such a bigshot in the parks department, how-come he needed the $300 apartment they had since WWII...also, who comes from a country filled with ponys to a non-pony country!

but i think what we are saying here is that books are dying. i mean like real, actual books. they aren't being burned and thrown in a fire or anything, but the paper is disappearing. thoughts?

Let me tell you something, funny boy... You know that little stamp? The one that says New York Public Library? Well, that may not mean anything to you, but that means a lot to me. One whole helluva lot. Sure, go ahead, laugh if you want to. I've seen your type before -- flashy, making the scene, flaunting convention. Yeah, I know what you're thinking... Why's this guy making such a big stink about old library books? Let me give you a hint, junior. Maybe we can live without libraries, people like you and me.... Maybe. Sure, we're too old to change the world. What about that kid, sitting down, opening a book right now in a branch of the local library and finding pictures of pee-pees and wee-wees in The Cat in the Hat and The Five Chinese Brothers. Doesn't he deserve better? Look, if you think this is about overdue fines and missing books, you'd better think again. This is about that kid's right to read a book without getting his mind warped. Or maybe that turns you on, nullnor... Maybe that's how you get your kicks... You and your goodtime buddies... I've got a flash for you, joy boy. Partytime is over.

you know the only reason why libraries never put book stores out of business is because they never marketed themsevles right. they should've made a rule that you couldn't read their books on the john. it's the whole reason ppl don't rent books from the library... i mean think about it. your reading a book from the library and wondering how many times it's been held while over a toilet. and it doesn't matter if your reading romeo and juliet or moby dick, the fact remains that ppl are touching their butts.

Why should that bother you? You watch gay porn despite not being gay.

gay ppl prefer intellectually devoid bald muscular guys for porn. and having a reputation for being creative, it's sort of suprising.
