  • Neil Young Mini-Project

This should be a snap for this crew.

There's a secretary at work. She's nice, and she's been very helpful lately, especially on a big trial in which we came out well. It came out in conversation today that she is an Neil fan (she lives on Cinnamon Lane), but she doesn't have any of the old stuff, which she really likes. I told her I would make her a disc to listen to on the way to and from work.

I'm guessing it needs 12-15 songs. She said she likes the rock and roll tunes and the acoustic tunes, just so long as it is the from the old albums.

So, what should I put on the disc? I can't think of a better group to weigh in on this important topic.

Geez, almost every track on Rust Never Sleeps is awesome.

And Heart of Gold, and Old Man from Harvest..... his 3rd album, I think.

Me? I love the album This Note's For You...... kind of jazz. swing.

not a huge Neil Young fan, but "Helpless" is a must.

"There is a town in north Ontario..... in my mind, I still need a place to go - all my changes were there."

it's incredibly heartfelt and haunting. and thanks to your post, I have learned just how poignant that time was for Young.

(the town is not actually in north Ontario, but it works just the same and it is in Ontario.)

I think we're probably looking at 1968 to 1975, which would leave out the bluenotes, unfortunately.

        Agreed on Helpless.

Seems weird to be a NY fan, and not know any of the early stuff. I'm guessing you leave off the dirtier rock numbers and the more introverted stuff. I don't imagine you want to get too cute either:

          After The Gold Rush
          Down By The River
          Old Man
          Needle and The Damage Done
          Heart of Gold
          My My Hey Hey
          Cortez
          Sugar Mountain
          Cowgirl in The Sand
          Cinnamon Girl
          Like A Hurricane
          Words (Between ...)
          Tonight's The Night
          Thrasher

She "knows" the early stuff, she just doesn't "have" any of the early stuff. That's why I'm putting some on a disc for her. I guess I could have asked her what all she wanted on it, but I figured part of the joy of the mix tape/disc is the surprise of finding out what is next. Excellent selections, BTW.

does your wife know you're making someone at work a mixed tape?
It certainly feels that way. But I'm distrustful of that feeling and am curious about evidence.

Sure, it starts all friendly, and then we all start talking about whose wife knows what, and then the next thing you know somebody is dead under the truck.
