Yeah, but we need a few guys to come through on their promise this season. I'm kind of excited about Pointer. I'd like to see 1 or 2 of the toolsy OF separate themselves from the rest, and the same with a couple of the pitchers.

It looks like Joe Savery makes the opening day roster. From fast track starting pitcher, to suspect, to near retirement, to batter, back to pitcher and now playing in Philly. Crazy story.

That’s the word on the street, at least. This site has been around for a little more than 5 years, and Savery’s story is probably the coolest thing I’ve seen since I started close…

So after last season's infield draft the Phillies have taken HS pitchers with their two supplemental picks and their second 2nd round pick. With the first pick in the second round they over-drafted a HS OF with a solid football commitment to AZ who's best tool is power. Thoughts are they are hoping to save a bit of money here to throw at the other 2nd rounder.

          Picks:
          #40 Shane Watson HS RHP - BA #30, MLB #34 - http://www.perfectgame.org/players/p...aspx?ID=299710
#54 Mitch Gueller HS RHP - BA #107 - Some rate Gueller as a better CF than P.
#77 Dylan Cozens HS OF - BA (not in top 500) -
          #95 Alec Rash HS RHP - BA #72, MLB #76 - http://www.perfectgame.org/Players/P...aspx?ID=228086
#125 Zachary Green HS SS - BA #385 as 3B - Phillies seem to like drafting guys named Green or Greene. - http://www.perfectgame.org/Players/P...aspx?ID=265548
          #158 Chris Serritella - College 1B - BA #209 - Always nice to get a Saluki!
#188 Andrew Pullin - HS OF - BA #257 - Phils love guys out of the Pacific Northwest. - http://www.perfectgame.org/Players/P...aspx?ID=227006
#218 Cameron Perkins - 3B Purdue - BA #145 - Lots of Power. Phils seem to be targeting power this draft.

stolen from a comment on Phuture Phillies.

It sounds like the big wish list guys outside of the top picks are 37th rounder Daniel Starwalt, a HS pitcher that is on most publication's top 100 lists, but fell because of a solid commitment to Stanford, and 26th rounder Evan Van Hoosier, a HS 2B who is already tweeting that he is college bound.

Each team has X amount of money to sign their top 10 picks. If they fail to sign any of them, the money slotted for that player is subtracted from your X allotment. You can spend up to $100k on any pick after the 10th round, but if you go over $100k it has to come out of your top 10 allotment. So apparently the trick with this draft is to sign all your top 10 picks so you get your full salary cap allotment, but sign as many of them to under cap deals so you have extra money to throw at a kid or two later on in the draft.

If I had to rank the players I was excited about from this draft I would go:

              Watson
              Rash
              Guellar
              Pullin
              Perkins
              Starwalt (doubtful)
              ...
              Serritella
              Cozens
              Green

Rash will not be signed and is heading to Missouri for college. Phils offered about $620k (about slot) and they wanted $800k.

I've let this thread got to seed a bit, but it's been a pretty exciting season for the phil's minor leagues.

3B Cody Asche who had a poor season last year in short-season williamsport was double jumped to Clearwater and tore the cover off the ball hitting .349/.378/.825. He was promoted just after the all-star break to AA reading and after a slow start has gotten red-hot again. He's now up to .270/.328/.777 in AA (and that slow start was SLOW). Depending on what he does next year and what the phillies do in the off-season at 3B, it's not inconceivable that Asche is starting slow on the MLB team in September of next year.

Co-2011 draftee Adam Morgan has also had a nice breakout season. 140K's in 123 innings at A+ to start the season and doing well after a recent promotion to AA.

Other 2011 draft picks, Walding, Quinn, Giles and Greene have all had positive seasons and drawn some attention. Quinn hit his first professional home-run (inside the park) in last night's NYPL All-Star game. His speed is said to be "game-changing".

A few of this year's draft picks are already showing positive signs as well. Second round pick Dylan Cozens started hot, cooled off, but has recently been playing better again. 2B Andrew Pullin has started well as has 3B Zach Green. Also, 16 year old Venezuelan signee Carlos Tocci has held his own in his first year playing ball in the US.

At Low-A lakewood, 3B Mikail Franco is showing positive signs and Kelly Dugan has resurrected his prospect status. 2012 College draft pick C Josh Ludy has been playing well as well.

At high-a Clearwater Zach Collier is back on the radar after injuries and a banned substance suspension. 2011 college draft pick Austin Wright has pitched very well and catcher Cameron Rupp has shown positive improvement. Top prospect (or #2) Jesse Biddle has shown steady progress as he moves up levels. Biddle has 125Ks in 122 innings this season.

In Reading (along with Asche) 1B Darin Ruf is putting up excellent numbers. After hitting 8Hrs in his last 10 games, Ruf is at .314/.405/.997 with 28 HRs. He's old for the league (26) and possibly limited to 1B though so expectations are tempered. It's speculated that Ruf will go to the AFL and play LF in hopes of expanding his value to the phils. Tyson Gillies is having a come back year after years of injuries. He's spent some time on the DL this season as well though, so we shall see. Gillies is currently hitting .289/.365/.810 in 49 games. Also, recent addition C Tommy Joseph (acquired from SF in the Pence trade) looks like a player and will probably be in the phillies top-5 prospects in off-season lists. OF Leandro Castro and P Jonathan Pettibone have shown good progress this season as well. Recent addition Ethan Martin (from LA in Victorino deal) has recaptured his prospect status after a wild 2011 season.

Not a lot of thrilling stuff at AAA, but 2B Cesar Hernandez has come back from injury and shown decent progress. He could be a possible replacement for Mini-Mart next season. SP Tyler Cloyd has been lights out for the Iron Pigs this season. Cloyd is 12-1 with an ERA of 2.23 in AAA this season. He is a soft tosser though, with a fastball in the high 80s. Great numbers but it's questionable how they will translate. The Phillies have had chances to pitch him this season and have opted not to, so that should tell you something about what they think. C Sebastian Valle was recently promoted after a decent but not spectacular season in AA. His power is real, but his place discipline is nearly non-existent.

Negatives this season are few. Brody Colvin is probably the biggest. Colvin has had control problems was removed from the A+ rotation for a while, pitched well in relief, was put back into the rotation, pitched decently, was promoted to AA and has been knocked around a good bit so far. Top Prospect Trevor May is still striking out guys, but his control issues have resurfaced. In 128 innings at AA he has struck out 127 but walked 71. Finally, Jiwann James while not playing poorly is yet to have a breakout season. Another year of .252/.296/.664.

why do you show a player's slash stats as avg/obp/ops?
In the best of times, our days are numbered, anyway. And it would be a crime against Nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly that it put off enjoying those things for which we were presumably designed in the first place, and which the gravest statesmen and the hoarsest politicians hope to make available to all men in the end: I mean the opportunity to do good work, to fall in love, to enjoy friends, to sit under trees, to read, to hit a ball and bounce the baby.

Matt (Philly): With breakouts like Asche, among others, coupled with trades as the Phillies farm system gone from terrible to at least average?

Matthew Eddy: I’ve been impressed with how well Asche and third-round lefty Adam Morgan have performed in their full-season debuts. Each has earned a promotion to Double-A. Add them to LHP Jesse Biddle, a legit rotation candidate in two years, and trade acquisitions like C Tommy Joseph and RHP Ethan Martin and yes I agree the Phillies have taken a big step forward, both in terms of prospect depth and potential impact.

Babe Ruf hit his 37 HR of the year and ties Ryan Howard's Reading (AA) franchise record for HRs in a season. It was Ruf's 19th HR in August. He had already broken Greg Luzinski's record for total bases at reading. I'm pretty sure he leads the MiLB in HRs this year.

Ruf is 26 and probably tied to 1B (although they have been trying him in LF) so more of a suspect than a prospect, but good times here.

The Phillies announced who will be participating in the Arizona Fall League and because I am very time constrained…here you have it: Pitchers: Tyler Knigge, Jay Johnson, Colby Shreve, and Kyl…

Comments about Asche being assigned to the AFL on Phuturephillies

Will Asche need an airplane to get to Arizona or will he just have to find a phone booth?

I hear he won’t bother with a bridge when he crosses the Mississippi River – he’ll just walk across it

                                AFL = Aschee Fall League

                                Phillies going to the AFL

Pitchers: Tyler Knigge, Jay Johnson, Colby Shreve, and Kyle Simon
3B: Cody Asche; C: Tommy Joseph; OF: Zach Collier

Ruf is headed to Venezuela to play LF for a winter league team.
